Lough Ennell is the most
southerly of the midland Loughs, south of Mullingar it is
a shallow lake thus almost all areas in it will produce trout. These
fish are pure silver with dark spots and grow to a large size. Locally
fish under 2lb are returned, its not surprising the Irish record brown trout,
26lb 2ozs, came from this lake. The main drawback on this lake is that
the fish are hard to catch. The best of the fishing is either to the
Mayfly or the Sedge hatches in May, June and July. Towards the end of
the season fry imitations can work well. The season
on Ennell is March 1st until October 12th. A Shannon Region Fishery Permit is
required for this lough.
