Lough Owel is situated north of Mullingar in
the Midlands; it is a small Lough by Irish standards. This lake however is
now stocked with some brown trout to augment the natural stocks, as the lake
does not have much in the way of spawning streams. It is a deep lake
and holds a few Char along with the Brown Trout. There are some very
large trout in this Lough, they are however difficult to catch even when the
Mayfly are up. It is during the vast hatches of the Green Peter and
Great Red Sedge (Murrough) that these large fish can be seen on the surface.
The Sedges in Lough Owel can be 2 inches long, a mouthful for any fish. The
main hatches of these flies are late June onwards until August but a few
continue to hatch into the autumn. There are tout in this lake well over 10lb
but the average size is between 2 and 3lb. The season on Owel is March 1st
until October 12th. A Shannon Region Fishery Board Permit is required for
this Lough
